The story

Bologna, a grey Sunday morning in November 1920: a city that seems built for beauty and conspiracy at once. In eleven minutes the newly elected Socialist council will take possession of the Palazzo d'Accursio, and half the city — Red flags on one side of the square, Blackshirts on the other — appears determined that it should end in blood.

Enjoyed this one?

Every story on Nocturnal Tales is free, and stays free. Listeners who choose to give are the reason there is a new one tomorrow.

This is our work and what we live on: two of us, writing and producing a story every night. Giving here goes straight to us, rather than through a platform that can change its mind overnight. Why donations are important.

A Bavarian mountainside in a snowstorm, and a castle on a black spur of rock with too many roofs and one red window burning beneath the highest of them. Arthur and the Belgian Detective have been summoned by an old acquaintance, the Baroness Adelheid von Eberwald, whose letter was admirably brief.

The Moabite Cipher

Dr Thorndyke

It begins in a crowd on Oxford Street, waiting for one of those processions that benevolent institutions periodically inflict upon London traffic. A man dies in the press of people.
